WESCO Industries and Community Team-Up: Recognizing Autism Awareness Month

Denison, IA (April 20, 2022) – April is Autism Awareness Month. It’s a time dedicated to promoting a better understanding of autism and developing more effective means of support for people living with autism and their families. To build a stronger community of support in Denison, Iowa, WESCO Industries has teamed up with local businesses to bring awareness to Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in a unique way.

WESCO Industries and its partner businesses are showing their recognition of ASD by placing unique decals in the windows of their storefronts. This awareness window decal has a distinctive puzzle-piece design that is iconic within the ASD community. The puzzle piece represents the complexity and vast diversity of individuals living on the autism spectrum.

In combination with the awareness signage, WESCO is promoting an understanding of ASD on its social media through an educational campaign. The awareness theme also extends to graphics on the WESCO Industries and WEareWESCO websites.

“It’s our mission to empower people with unique needs–including those with autism–and create a supportive and compassionate community for individuals to thrive in,” said Clay Adams, Director of WESCO Industries.

WESCO has an active history of building healthy community awareness of ASD. In 2021, the non-profit donated weighted blankets to area EMS departments in the event first responders treated individuals with autism. Weighted blankets are proven to help calm individuals on the autism spectrum or with anxiety and stress disorders. The organization has also hosted conferences that provide comprehensive, evidence-based information to assist educators, professionals, and families in helping shape a better understanding of autism.

The non-profit organization specializes in providing disability services that assist individuals with ASD. WESCO offers a variety of supportive programs such as supported employment, day habilitation, child and group respite, 24-hour and non-24-hour supported community living, transitional living, adult day services, and a residential care facility.
